Dr Tanya Hopwood, MAPS
Tanya Hopwood attained her PhD (in Research Psychology) and an Honours degree in Social Science from the University of New England. Tanya is registered as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She completed her Masters degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Newcastle and is a Clinical Psychology Registrar. Tanya is a Member of the Australian Psychological Society (MAPS) and is currently completing her Endorsement to become a Clinical Psychologist.
Dedicated to helping children, young people and parents overcome challenges and build better, more fulfilling lives, Tanya understands that everyone is different and that therapy should never be a a one-size-fits-all process. She prides herself on taking the time to understand her clients’ unique perspectives, identifying their challenges and strengths, and tailoring treatment to best suit the individual.
Tanya has experience implementing the Cool Kids program for primary-school aged children with anxiety in both group and individual formats. She has delivered parenting training, including Emotion Coaching and Integrated Family Intervention for Child Conduct Problems. Tanya uses and continues to build her skills across the following modalities: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
In her research, Tanya has focused on trauma and its related effects, including anticipatory traumatic reaction, which refers to the impact that global threats can have on people’s emotions, cognition, and behaviours. She is interested in the specific challenges faced by children and adolescents today due to technology and social media influences. Tanya has completed professional development training in complex trauma and is a member of Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.
Tanya recognises the critical nature of early intervention. She engages with children and adolescents in a warm, supportive way and – where appropriate – uses humour and fun to build rapport and maximise motivation.
