Newcastle Child & Adolescent Psychologist
Mr Liam O'Dell, MAPS
Based in the Newcastle clinic, Liam O'Dell is a Psychologist registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and holds a Bachelor of Psychology (BPsych) from Charles Sturt University. Liam has previous experience in the social work sector working with a diverse range of young people, including young offenders, and their families, to achieve meaningful and collaborative outcomes. During this time, Liam was exposed to the varied mental health presentations which contributed to offending and other challenging behaviours, many of which were later found to be inadequately managed, misunderstood, or misdiagnosed forms of neurodiversity.
Following this experience, Liam took a preventative approach towards mental health and commenced working within a specialised clinic focusing on neurodiversity and its comorbidities. He adopts neuro-affirming approaches when working with clients and stakeholders with a goal of improving his clients' overall daily functioning and well-being.
Liam currently adopts an eclectic, client-centred approach, with a foundation in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), for helping clients understand their neurodiversity, cognitive profiles, learning difficulties and other behaviours as well as mood disorders. Liam also draws on both the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) and Positive Parenting Program (PPP) models when working with young people and their families in a scaffolded and skills based approach.
Liam has a special interest in utilising psychometric assessments to complement evidence-based approaches for treatment and to assist clients in understanding and better supporting their challenges. He has a genuine desire in empowering clients through recognising, accepting and appreciating their differences in a way to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
